Music Theory, Music Composition, and Music Improvisation are Independent Courses of Study
that are taught in a Seminar Manner as if the Student were in College. Each Area of Specialization in Thoroughly covered in Conjunction with the Student's Performance of the Material being Studied. Performance Applications assist in ensuring Comprehension and Utilization. Performance Application is Key.
MUSIC THEORY focuses primarily on Chord Construction, (this assumes that all scales have been thoroughly Attained, Memorized, and Understood), the Performance of all Inversions with Hands Independently as well as Coordinated, Harmonic Resolutions, Harmonic Progressions, Analysis, and all that is Necessary to Accomplish Accompaniments whether for Integration with Composition or Applied Accompaniments for Instrumental Groups or Voice. It is Imperative that a Pianist is Cognizant with the Necessary Techniques for Integration with an Instrumental Aggregate, for Execution of Fake Arrangements, and for Vocal Accompaniments. All Applications are practiced in a Real Sense rather than the Oversimplifications and Limitations of mere Paperwork.
MUSIC COMPOSITION encompasses the Study of Form (Musical Architecture) in its Analytical and Practicable modes of Study and Application. Motivic and Thematic Development and Peregrinations are Studied and Applied. Original Compositions are Emphatically Encouraged and Executed. The Objective is to prepare the Student as if he were performing before a Professorial Panel for Admission into College as a Composition Major.
MUSIC IMPROVISATION is presented from a Jazz-Oriented Perspective. Blues and Contemporary Extemporization are Accentuated. An Individualistic, Encyclopedic Collection of Riffs is developed as a Repository or Reservoir to be drawn from during Improvisatorial Exploration. Exploratory Experimentation is of the Essence. The Multiplicity of Variations, Attainable through an almost Countless Combination of Riffs, Culminates in a Personal Style.
Imitation of the Great Improvisatorial Masters is Studied and Used as an Expedient for Expansion of the Students' Techniques. Historically, Artists have always "borrowed" from one another with their eye on the Eventuation or Creation of a Unique Style of Expressiveness. With the Introduction of Interpolations, Humor becomes an Ingredient in the Improvisatorial Recipe. An Interpolation is the Interjection of a well-known tune into the Performance. It brings about a Momentary Transmogrification of the Improvisation that is Comic in Character. A good example of this is 'Pop Goes the Weasel.' When Interpolated in the course the Extemporization, it will Inevitably Elicit Laughter from the Audience. A Dictionary of Useful Interpolations is compiled, although any well-known tune can be used and made available to be Performed in an Impromptu Manner. Spontaneity is Key. Music Improvisation is Spontaneous Composition. Music Improvisation requires Skill, Imagination, Creativity, and Spontaneity. Music Theory is a Prerequisite Course to Music Improvisation.
